What is DNS Propagation?

DNS propagation refers to the time it takes for changes to your domain's DNS records (like A, MX, CNAME, and NS records) to be updated across the entire global network of DNS servers. When you modify a DNS record, these changes don't appear everywhere instantly.

How Do DNS Records Propagate?

When you update your DNS records, the changes are first applied to your authoritative DNS servers. Internet Service Providers (ISPs) and other DNS resolvers around the world cache DNS information to speed up lookups. They periodically query the authoritative servers to refresh their cache.

Because each ISP and resolver has its own caching policy (dictated by the record's Time-To-Live, or TTL), the update doesn't happen simultaneously everywhere. Some users might still see the old information served from a cache, while others will see the new records after their local DNS server refreshes its data. This is why you need to check DNS propagation from multiple locations.

Why Does DNS Propagation Take Time?

The delay in DNS propagation is primarily due to caching designed to reduce the load on authoritative DNS servers and improve lookup speed for end-users.

  • Caching: DNS resolvers store copies of DNS records for a certain period (TTL). Changes only become visible to users querying that resolver after its cache for that specific record expires and it fetches the new information.
  • Global Network: The internet is a vast network. Updates need to traverse this network to reach DNS servers in different regions and countries.
  • ISP Policies: Different ISPs and recursive DNS providers have varying TTL enforcement and cache refresh schedules, leading to inconsistencies during the propagation period.
